The leaves on the trees are suggesting that fall is here but the temperatures aren’t quite yet. These 80 degree days have the people who are ready for it to be fall wishing the temperatures would catch up with what the trees already know, while those holding onto the last bits of summer are wondering why the trees are turning when the weather is still so warm. Contrary to popular belief however, the temperatures have nothing to do with the fabulous fall colors we see every year, it’s all about the available sunlight! Plants make food from sunlight and chlorophyll, and when the daylight hours start to decrease many plants and trees stop producing food for themselves and the green chlorophyll goes away, leaving the leaves to change to the beautiful yellows, oranges, purples, and reds we associate with fall.
So, when was the last time you changed your colors?
